Hi everyone and welcome to the Cysterwigs Community!
I’m Nancy and in a nutshell, my life revolves around family, work and wigs. I’ve always been a single parent to my daughter and am now helping her to raise her two children. In addition, I’m currently getting licensed to provide foster care for teenage girls. My day jobs (yes, that’s plural) involve my full-time role as a Partner/CFO for a regional advertising company and teaching accounting at the university level. However, I’m on hiatus on the latter due to state budget issues.
My hair started thinning about ten years ago. I started with toppers, as many do, until a medical treatment five years ago went awry and caused almost all my hair to fall out over a weekend. Since, then I’ve been a full-time wig wearer and avid collector. I wear only short, synthetic wigs so I hope I can be a resource for anyone also looking for stylish shorties. The first time I went out with a full wig, I thought surely, everyone can tell! That level of self-consciousness was relatively quickly replaced by the confidence I gained in my appearance and not having to work so hard to cover the thin spots.
I “outed” myself rather quickly as a wig wearer as I love to switch up colors and different styles. Those who don’t know me often toss out a compliment on how great my hair looks, never thinking that it’s not growing out of my head.
Favorites by brand:
Raquel Welch – Winner and Voltage
Jon Renau – Kris, Vanessa, Anne, Natalie and Annette
Ellen Wille – Golf and Click
Estetica – Lily and Carly (both discontinued, sadly)
Envy – Penelope and Micky
Tressallure – Brianna, Marla and Emily.
I’ve been in a blond phase for the last few years and only wear rooted colors. My go-to’s are Jon Renau Shaded Praline, Raquel Welch’s Shadow Shades Golden Wheat and Tressallure’s Silky Sand. The rooting really helps to hide permatease and add a more authentic look, in my opinion. However, I also love auburn highlighted brunettes such as Raquel Welch’s Shadow Shades Hazelnut, Jon Renau Raspberry Twist and Caramel Ribbon, Tressallure English Tea HL and Envy’s Amaretto Cream.
Favorite cap construction:
Although most of mine are standard cap, I prefer a lace front with no monotop. I do wear a wig grip and often times, I find the wig grip can peek through that monofilament top.
Advice I wish I knew when I first started wearing wigs:
Bricks and mortar salons are great but will charge you a lot more and sometimes remove the tags to prevent wearers from buying online. There are so many amazing online resources and I hope I can be one for you!
